If you have a small balcony or limited outdoor space, it is important to plan carefully. when designing it as every inch counts and you should try to ensure that the design is appropriate to the size of the space.
My outdoor space consists of three-square feet outside the kitchen door plus back stairs leading down to the garden belonging to the flat downstairs (I also have a small "parapet" at the front of the property).
I would recommend using "layering" (foreground, middle ground, background) which will create the illusion of greater size and depth. This can also be enhanced with the use of a mirror. I have used a mirror to reflect the plants and the light from the back door and it also creates a sense of space
I have placed the herbs on the lower steps (three varieties of mint, sage, rosemary and thyme) and flowering plants on the upper steps.
Styling techniques for your outdoor space
It is important to choose plants that are suitable to your microclimate which is created by the direction you face and patterns of wind. My three-square feet is north facing so only gets early morning and late afternoon sun. Many plants that I would love to grow just won't survive in a north facing space. For balconies or any space above ground, it's also important to use plants that are at least one full zone hardier than you would if the space were down at ground level.
When designing my outdoor space I use the same styling principles that I use for interiors. For example, I keep to a colour theme with one or two accent colours, and I group the plants to create focal points mixing textures, shapes and sizes. This will create more impact than if you had a mix of many different colours, shapes and sizes randomly placed.
My outdoor space is predominantly shades of pink through to purple with a touch of blue and also a very small touch of orange.

I previously had a huge lavender tub on the wall outside the door but had to remove it as it became top heavy. I've replaced it with two hydrangeas which make a better display of colour. The plant on the left is rocket (arugula) from which I've had many a lovely salad!I placed the hanging basket so that it can be seen both from the door and from the kitchen window
